Reducing Software Imports and Ceasing Import from India for National Security and Economic Development

Pakistan’s economic landscape faces significant challenges, marked by sluggish growth rates and soaring inflation, relying heavily on financial injections from the International Monetary Fund. Some experts argue that opening avenues to a neighboring market of substantial scale could inject new vitality into Pakistan's economy.

 

Globally, the utilization of AI products and services across diverse industries, particularly within the financial and banking sectors, is recognized for its potential to propel enterprise growth.

 

Recent observations reveal that Pakistan's fintech sector, alongside select banks, has been engaging with Indian-origin firms, procuring various IT products, cybersecurity measures, and AI solutions. There is a threat to important information of Pakistani banking sector from the products of Indian companies, the sources said. Data and personal identification information could be misused due to presence of malware virus.

 

Of grave concern is the persistent use of Indian security products and solutions, which pose a concealed yet potent threat to Pakistan's Critical Information Infrastructure (CII), notably the banking sector. This threat manifests through the potential infiltration of backdoors or malware within these products, enabling the collection of sensitive data such as logs, traffic analysis, and personally identifiable information (PII). Moreover, there exists a direct ingress into Pakistan's CII facilitated by Indian products, equipped with passive monitoring capabilities.

 

The infiltration of Indian products into Pakistan's IT industry, fintech, and banking sectors has been brought to light, raising apprehensions of potential interference in Pakistan's IT landscape.

 

In response to these concerns, the federal government has issued directives to all ministries, divisions, and provincial authorities, urging them to cease the acquisition and usage of Indian-origin AI products and services. Instead, stakeholders are advised to explore alternatives offered by local entities vetted by the Pakistan Software House Association (P@SHA).

 

Notably, recent reports from Exodus Intelligence, a US-based company, highlighted India's utilization of zero-day security vulnerabilities to surveil Pakistan and China, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

 

Furthermore, incidents of cyber espionage perpetrated by Indian intelligence agencies against Pakistan, as evidenced by breaches targeting government officials and military personnel, emphasize the urgent need for vigilance and precautionary measures. Moreover indian companies could acquire data and gain access to monitoring capabilities, it is feared.

 

Additionally, it is imperative for all Pakistanis to boycott Indian products as a stance against the violence in Occupied Kashmir, aligning with principles of solidarity and human rights advocacy.

 

To foster economic growth and technological self-reliance, it is imperative to curtail software imports by embracing locally developed solutions, thereby reducing dependence on imports and mitigating associated costs such as import duties. The Pakistan Software House Association (P@SHA) is urged to spearhead initiatives aimed at promoting and bolstering the adoption of indigenous software solutions.

 

Moreover, concerted efforts are required from the government to bolster IT exports and cultivate ancillary industries such as local software development houses. Emphasizing software exports will not only stimulate economic growth but also reinforce Pakistan's position as a hub for innovation and technological prowess.

 

We encourage all stakeholders to prioritize the use of Pakistan's locally made products, harnessing the expertise and capabilities of our own IT industry. By supporting local businesses and fostering a culture of innovation, we can pave the way for sustainable economic development and technological sovereignty.

    Alert and threat is evident and clear but there has to be a task force for continuous monitoring of what applications and resources are threat to Pakistan's Security and data integrity.

    If possible we need to share a list of application / solutions that could be threating the nations integrity and find alternates
