Revitalizing Pakistan's Economy: Embracing Local Production and Export Growth

Amidst an impending economic crisis, it's crucial for everyone to contribute to the economy by shunning imported goods and embracing local products. Revitalizing the economy hinges on reducing or halting imports, with the government directing its attention towards industries capable of boosting exports. A forward-thinking government should champion local products in public spheres and discourage reliance on imports.

To promote local products, the government must assist industries in offering them at competitive prices. This necessitates governmental support through tax relief and utility bill subsidies. When products are manufactured at lower costs, they become accessible to the public at more affordable prices. Price remains a pivotal factor influencing public preference for cheaper, locally-made goods.

Conversely, imposing taxes on local industries or hiking electricity prices for them will inevitably inflate the prices of manufactured goods. If compelled to fix prices, these industries may compromise on quality to produce cheaper alternatives, a move unlikely to resonate with consumers seeking superior quality. Consumers are often willing to pay a premium for higher-quality imported products instead of buying low quality local products.

The automotive sector exemplifies this situation. Recent amendments by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) indicate that a 25% sales tax will persist on locally manufactured or assembled vehicles with an engine capacity of 1400cc and above. Consequently, the prices of locally manufactured or assembled vehicles are set to match or exceed those of imported counterparts. So, the public will definitely prefer to own an imported vehicles. This decision appears ill-fated and threatens to severely impact our nation's economy, underscoring the incompetence of our government officials.

Regrettably, successive caretaker and PDM government administrations have led our country to the brink of economic collapse. Despite looming default, the government remains bereft of a coherent economic strategy. Instead, it continues to greenlight projects that will exacerbate import dependency, such as importing laptops, expanding metro bus networks, and acquiring helicopters for air ambulances. Undertaking such extravagant and luxury projects amidst widespread hunger not only lacks foresight but also jeopardizes the nation's economic stability.

Pakistan urgently requires a more adept and knowledgeable cadre of leaders capable of formulating a comprehensive economic vision. These leaders must prioritize curtailing imports, fostering export growth, and steering the nation towards sustainable economic prosperity.
