Why WhatsApp Services disrupted across Pakistan?
The citizens of Pakistan are facing continuous outages of social media applications including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. People are suffering due to this outage, as they are unable to upload media files while connected to mobile data. However, voice messages and video files can still be sent and viewed through broadband Wi-Fi connections at home or in the office.
The telecom regulator, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), has not issued any statement on the issue, and cellular mobile operators (CMOs) also claim they have not received any complaints.
There has been no statement or notification from the government regarding the blockage of social media. This uninformed outage is essentially due to the ongoing filtration and monitoring setup implemented at the instruction of the current government. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) has a history of tapping phones and leaking audio calls of opponents. This time, PMLN plans to completely take over the internet in Pakistan to monitor and keep checks on citizens. They intend to take action against people who talk or post anything against PMLN. The government plans to install next-generation firewalls (NGFW) and web application firewalls (WAF) on internet service providers (ISP) to enable real-time data monitoring of citizens.
People connected to broadband, DSL, or GPON Fiber are able to use social media smoothly because PTCL has already implemented firewalls with deep packet inspection capabilities, enabling the government to monitor conversations and social media activities. Therefore, the PTA has instructed ISPs and the telecom sector to keep social media blocked until they implement the necessary firewalls for government monitoring. This keeps social media blocked on mobile data, forcing people to connect to their WiFi at home, where monitoring is already in place.
People cannot express their own opinions under this government's tenure. PMLN has used every means to suppress public opinion. They want citizens to be subservient to the government and continue paying taxes so government officials can enjoy a lavish lifestyle. The government should know that supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are literate enough to form their own opinions, and nobody will be able to stop them. PMLN should remember that they will be held accountable for every penny of taxpayer money they have wasted.
